On Swedish Architecture Day, November 24, The National Association of Swedish Architects (SAR) announced the winners of the Kasper Salin Prize 2000.
The Prize, for the new residential area Kv Castle Estate in Helsingborg, was awarded to Henrik Jais-Nielsen and Mats White arkitekter AB and clients HSB Nordvästra Skåne/Ulf Nordström.
In awarding this years Kasper Salin Prize the jury felt that the Kv Castle area demonstrates that it is possible to design an architecturally rewarding residential area within a budget; that consideration and quality is not synonymous with extra costs.
A limited amount of architectural elements are used in the composition of the facades and the scale of the area blends naturally with the surrounding buildings.
The large terrace like balconies make the apartments light and airy. Great attention has been paid to the smallest details, from the public to the private areas, to make for a well functioning whole.
It is a modern residential area where each apartment has been designed with generosity and consideration for the individual tenant.
The Jury Members:
Inga Varg, Sten Gromark, Jan Lisinski and Christer Malmström
The Kasper Salin prize, Sweden's most prestigious architecture prize, was established in 1962 by a donation Kasper Salin, Stockholm's City Architect (1856-1919) had given to Swedish Architecture.
The Prize is given to a Swedish building or group of buildings of high architectural quality. The bronze plate, designed by architect SAR Bengt Lindroos, is mounted on the building's facade. A smaller version of the plate is given to the architects and the client.
The first Kasper Salin Prize was given to SAR architect Sigurd Lewerentz for the Björkhagen Church in Stockholm.
SAR (The National Association of Swedish Architects) has been awarding the Prize since 1980. Last year the prize was given to the new art exhibition place Millesgården, designed by architect Johan Celsing.
