The Center for Architecture is currently presenting a preview of the new 52-story New York Times Building under construction on Eighth Avenue between 40th and 41st Streets.

The building, one of the most highly anticipated new skyscraper projects in the city, is a collaboration between Renzo Piano Workshop and FXFOWLE Architects.
Models, drawings, and material samples describe the design process. Special emphasis is placed on the sustainable features and techniques, with samples of the construction materials being used.

Visitors can also make use of two laptops; one follows the collaboration process, the other the building’s green aspects, interior, and wind design.

The design incorporates a transparent glass tower screened by planes of glazed ceramic tubes that seem to float above the street. Among its energy efficient features are an advanced sun-shading system, floor to ceiling glass, increased ceiling heights, efficient lighting and mechanical systems, displaced ventilation, extensive mock-up testing, and a variety of additional sustainable features.

Due to be completed in 2007, The New York Times Building is a joint venture between The New York Times Company and Forest City Ratner Companies. The New York Times will own and occupy the lower half of the building.

The exhibition will be on view at the Center for Architecture through February 17, 2007.
