International Competition
Design a Treehouse for a Tropical Island Resort
Questions and Answers 2
Is there any set budget for the construction?
Not really; some designs may be chosen for their uniqueness or the fact that they may be easy to construct, but we are looking for many winners and there are great craftsmen available in Vietnam and China so we welcome designs that make extensive use of local labor.
.
Are we only allowed to use locally available materials and, if so, what are the available materials for each site?
We would prefer locally available materials as they tend to be more ecological by "nature". Again, some design winners may use a variety of high-tech materials if warranted by a specific design feature. The local materials at most of the sites include good sturdy hard woods, grown in tropical jungles, with names you would not be familiar with.
They work well in treehouses because they are most likely to be resistant to insects and monsoon rains.
Bamboo is also encouraged if used in a way that is easily replaced as bamboo is not durable over longer periods.

What is the actual area given for the design?
The designs should be between 400 square feet and 1,000 square feet.

Can we obtain more detailed description of the connection/fixing detail to the tree trunk (possibly a sketch)?
We will publish a sketch of a connection as soon as David gets back to Hawaii. However, you can do research and find a unique connection to a Coconut Palm tree. Keep in mind that connections from tree to tree may not necessarily be desirable if they are rigid due to the trees swaying independently during high winds.
