The two Mango trees, spaced 15 feet apart, are on the North East Coast of Maui, not far from Hana. Below the roots in front is a sizable stream bed with running water about 10% of the time. There is a clearing behind the trees and a beautiful 200 degree ocean view which is about one mile away, the elevation is approximately 600' above sea level.
It appears that mostly non-dimensioned lumber is used and also trees that generally have a round cross section as opposed to a rectilinear section? Is this a requirement, or may we specify dimensioned hardwoods in our designs?
The treehouses for China were built in an area where dimensional lumber was not available, in fact it became preferable to simply specify dimensions cut to preferred shapes and sizes. If you design for Hawaii it would be more appropriate to specify dimensionally cut lumber. There is basically one kind of common Coconut Palm tree; you should specify the size of the tree that you will use by height and circumference.
What about about security issues. Do the houses need to have a of lockable door or secured entry?
Security is not an issue at all. None of the treehouses have locked doors. These treehouses are all located in Paradise; there are no hoodlums!
Where can I find information about compostable toilets?
Try the internet. There are several propane heated shower systems available.
Where does the water come from and is there a typical system you have used in previous houses?
All sites chosen for the competition will have water piped to the site. You must decide how to deal with it as it approaches the trees. You must not be able to see pipes running up tree trunks.
What about amenities?
If you choose one of the big trees for China or Hawaii to design a large treehouse (close to 1000 square feet) you can include a kitchen with a two burner propane system stove, if you choose a smaller one in palm trees it should be kept simple.
