Plenty of daylight makes its way into the underground stations of the Copenhagen metro, which has been extended with 17 new stations featuring striking modern architecture.

Deep below Copenhagen’s cobbled streets, sorbet-hued houses and glossy buildings, a new addition to the city has been dug in and designed to connect its farthest reaches. Opened in 2019 Copenhagen Metro’s 15.5 km-long Cityringen serves 17 new stations in a loop connecting the city centre with Nørrebro, Østerbro, and Frederiksberg.

Beyond ease of access from street level and the inclusion of natural daylight in stations, this is an updated extension of the Metro’s existing design language. In Cityringen’s subterranean world, stations will be uniquely designed through the application of new forms, colours and materials, platform flooring, and railings and elevator details.

Honouring the diversity of the areas that surround Cityringen’s stations, stairways, skylights and concourses will be sensitively integrated at ground level. Neighbours have also been considered during construction, with the ‘Cool Construction’ project, using the construction sites as canvasses for artists.

Art will also feature in the new M4 line, an extension of Cityringen to make Nordhavn and Sydhavn accessible between 2020 and 2024. The Sydhavn section’s five stations will integrate work by renowned artists into their architecture, to be seen daily by about 43,000 people arriving, pausing and continuing on their way.
